Speaking of Photography

Beth Lilly

Please come out and join us for June's "Speaking of Photography".

Beth Lilly will be discussing "The Oracle @ Wifi."

Four years ago, Beth Lilly began a public/performance/interactive art project titled "The Oracle @ Wifi." When cell phones became equipped with decent cameras, she saw the opportunity for a true collaborative art project. Transcending time and geography, a person could call her from anywhere in the world and she could make a photograph and email it back to them - an interaction that was both intimate and in real-time. This idea evolved into a system of divination, using a cell phone camera to tell people's fortunes. Instead of shuffling a deck of cards, her location when called would be the random element. And instead of an unchanging selection of images, each image in her system would be unique, created spontaneously from the contemporary life and open to interpretation.

Join Beth on June 15th for a discussion of her Oracle project, as well as her successful $12,000 fundraising campaign through Kickstarter.com, resulting in her soon-to-be published book titled, "The Oracle @ Wifi." The publish date is set for Spring 2012.

Born in 1963, Beth Lilly grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia. She studied film production and screen play writing at the University of Georgia, receiving an ABJ in 1985. Her last term, she took a photography class and found her passion. While writing and producing radio ads and a fun stint handling craft services for the film, "Friday the 13th: Part 6" she began teaching herself photography. She returned to college, this time to earn a Masters of Fine Arts in photography from Georgia State University in 1993. She went on to serve as photo editor and then Director for the Turner Broadcasting photography department (promoting cable stations CNN, TNT, TBS, TCM and sports teams Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks) until 2002, when she left to concentrate on her own art projects. Beth Lily currently lives with her husband in Atlanta Georgia and Highlands North Carolina. You can view her work at www.bethlilly.com
