Bill Lowe

Bill Lowe is the owner and director of The Lowe Gallery, one of the South’s largest and most esteemed resources for contemporary art. His gallery is renowned for bringing a wide range of artists to prominence including the photographers Maggie Hasbrouck and John Folsom, and, perhaps most notably, Todd Murphy, whose works often combine photographic elements with other media.

"The single defining interest in my life is metaphysics," Bill says. "I see my passion for art as a by-product of that focus, a by-product of my interest in communication with a higher existence. I think the role art serves historically is to connect us with Source, with God. Most of the art I’m drawn to has a strong metaphysical yearning, a psycho-emotional flavor, an element of spirituality."

That philosophy has lead Bill to embrace photographers who use photography as a starting point and then manipulate or augment the image in order to enhance the message. "Photography has a critical place in contemporary art because it’s a collaborative form. It’s a reflection of the direction mankind is moving, combining science and manufacturing with spirituality to create a psycho-emotional communication."

The Lowe Gallery will be expanding its presence in the art world toward the end of 2001 with the opening of a gallery space on the west coast.
