Laurie Kratochvil

Laurie Kratochvil has been involved in photography for over twenty–five years. She began her career at the Los Angeles Times in 1974 and worked for numerous national publications before joining Rolling Stone in 1982. During her twelve years there, the magazine won every major photography prize including the National Magazine Award.

While working for Rolling Stone, Kratochvil edited a number of books, including the New York Times best seller, Rolling Stone: The Photographs. Kratochvil has curated several photography exhibitions in the United States and Europe; she is a frequent panelist and lecturer and has judged numerous photography competitions.

Kratochvil was the founding photography editor for InStyle Magazine and worked there until 2005 before leaving to start her own visual consulting business. She has also consulted for several other consumer magazines such as Mirabella, Self, Bloomberg Personal, Modern Maturity, Men’s Journal, IBM’s Think, and most recently for Oprah Winfrey’s magazine, O. Kratochvil’s book projects include Cyclops by Albert Watson, Africa by Herb Ritts, Elements of Style by Phillip Bloch and the recently released CUBA-Picturing Change by E. Wright Ledbetter.

Kratochvil also teaches at the International Center of Photography in New York City and the Santa Fe Workshops in New Mexico.

Kratochvil is actively involved in the Presidents Council at the International Center of Photography and sits on the Advisory Board of The Center of Photography at Woodstock. She is a native of Newport Beach, California and currently resides in New York City.
