BIOGRAPHY
Fay Gold
Fay Gold is the owner and president of Fay Gold Gallery in Atlanta. She holds a B.A. from Adelphi University in drama and art history. Before opening her gallery in 1980, she taught painting and drawing to children and adults and conducted educational trips to New York. The trips were designed to help new art Collector's immerse themselves in the worlds of photography, painting, and sculpture.
"Photography was always my first love," she says, noting that the Fay Gold Gallery opened in 1980 with an exhibition of the photographs of Irving Penn. "Photography inspires you visually and mentally. It records the beauty of the contrasts that exist in the world.
In 1982 she was the first gallery-owner to exhibit Cindy Shermans work, and similarly began exhibiting Robert Mapplethorpes photographs from the inception of his career. The gallery is renowned for its extensive in-depth inventory of prominent nationally known and regional artists including Andres Serrano, Joyce Tenneson, and Sandy Skoglund, who are among Fay Golds favorites.
In addition to her work as a gallery-owner and her personal passion as an art collector, Ms. Gold is involved in a variety of civic and professional organizations. While working with Sir Elton John as he formed his celebrated collection of photographic works, she held two gala art auctions in 1995 and 96, raising more than $700,000 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. A similar fund-raising event will be repeated in the Fall of 2002. She is also a founding member of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers, known as A.I.P.A.D., and is on the boards of the Atlanta College of Art, the International Womens Forum, and the Georgia Lawyers for the Arts.
Ms. Golds contributions to the art world were recognized locally when she received the Big Thinker Award from the Brain Injury Association of Georgia, and internationally when the State of Israel awarded her the National Womens Division "Gift of Creation Award."
In upcoming months, Fay Gold Gallery will be showcasing the works of Lisette Model, Ruth Orkin, Jerry Uelsmann, David Levinthal, and Andres Serrano, among others.
