Juried by Julian Cox
Curator of Photography for the High Museum of Art
Six photographers from the Southeastern United States are featured with a body of their work in this exhibition.
With this exhibit, APG asks the question, “What subjects inspire these photographers and what work surfaces as a result of living in the American South?“ The answers may surprise you as you view images influenced by the photographer’s choice of living location.

Juror’s Statement
"It was a pleasure to review the photographs submitted for this exhibition. I enjoy the process of looking at new work. It expands my horizons, and helps me redefine the boundaries of my taste and experience. The six artists selected were drawn from a large field of vital and talented competitors, offering encouraging proof that the art of photography is alive and well in our community.
The juror’s privilege is the joy of discovery. I am always on the lookout for something that I have not seen before – for a point of view that makes a lasting impression. I am attracted to work that demonstrates an understanding and awareness of the materials and traditions of photography, while also offering a unique perspective on a subject or theme. Craft is also very important to me; the photograph must be well made and have integrity as an object.
Here are some quick thoughts on the work of the six artists selected:
William Boling – A witty and inquiring eye for the beauty that exists in mundane, unkempt urban spaces. Strong understanding of how color and composition work in tandem.
Andrea Brown – Intimate, gem-like black and white prints that are full of beauty and vulnerability. These photographs prove, unequivocally, that good things come in small packages.
Don Dudenbostel – The subject matter is quintessentially Southern, the vision honest, the prints beautifully crafted.
Chandler Leathers – These rigorously formal, surprisingly tender, portraits of military personnel are a poignant reminder of photography’s capacity to address the important issues of our time.
Megan Ledbetter – These vibrant, penetrating color portraits reveal a heartwarming curiosity and psychological depth. You want to meet and get to know the subjects.
Elona Miller-Long – A moving series of family portraits; there is a sense of coherence and togetherness in these distinctly individual lives.
Each photographer’s engagement with their subject matter shines through in these bodies of work, providing an inspiring example of what is possible when vision, craft and perseverance are aligned toward a common goal."
