APG Gallery Exhibits 2002
Juror Statement
I am very honored to be part of the first show at APGs new space and its return to TULA. Last week, when I entered the APG gallery to begin reviewing the works, I was stunned at the number of photographs (250) and amazed at the quality. It was exciting to see so much new and interesting work in one space. In 2000, the selection process took about three hours. This year, it was difficult to finish the job in the same day.
Two years ago, when I was asked to jury a show for APG, I said I only wanted to look at works that were produced in 2000. The idea had nothing to do with the millennium, but rather because I think it is important to show the work of active photographers in the community. Anyone can dig up a decent image from the archives but it takes work and energy to accomplish something in less than a year.
I wish everyone could be included in this show, because I found merit in the work of every entrant. Submitting your art for a juried show is never easy so I commend everyone who took the time to enter. Being a juror is also not an easy task. You try your best to remain neutral and not let your own personal aesthetics take hold.
When making a selection, I try to look for work that expresses an idea in a different manner. I also like to see work that is technically proficient. I think it is important that the craft of photography not get lost in the digital innovations of our age. It is also important that the work is enduring and not trendy. When youre really lucky you find an artist whom is both technically proficient, and conveys a new thought.
I was amazed at the diversity of work in this show and have tried to group the selected photographs in a manner that displays how people often have similar ideas but their outcome is very different from one another. One of the walls displays a number of different artists who are using a window or passage as a focal point. Another wall shows a group of nudes while another wall displays varying landscapes. Hopefully, the groupings help strengthen the individuality of each photographer.
With thanks,
Jane Jackson
