APG Gallery Exhibits 2000
Southern Exposure
December 2, 2000 – February 3, 2001
Juried by Mary Virginia Swanson
Each of the five artists on view in this exhibition demonstrated spirited exploration of their subjects, and have thoughtfully interpreted their images via well-executed prints. They are each to be commended for the strengths of their overall bodies of work.
Ron Rubino's window to his view of the highway offers us a unique perspective on what we all observe daily, but perhaps don't see.
Laine Harris submitted two separate bodies of work. First, the "drag queens" captures their brash energy yet reveals a curious element of the unknown. Secondly, the sensitive portraits of those less fortunate whose inner spirit and pride is revealed to us via these gracious images.
Frank Hunter's studies of the sunflower demonstrate how exploration and wonder need never cease. Printing the images in platinum/palladium enhances his interpretations.
Manuel Llaneras' impressions of contemporary Cuba, with his skillful selective framing, draw us into the moments he memorializes with his camera.
Jerry Siegel's portraits demonstrate not only technical command but also the ability to work with his subjects in a form of partnership to capture their individualism.
I thank all the photographers who submitted their work for the wonderful opportunity to view their images, and wish them the very best in their creative endeavors for years to come.
